Know Before You Register
A few useful things to know for new players
Membership Requirements

To play in any TGPA season, all members must:

  1. Purchase an annual membership ($20 + HST), valid from September 30 to August 31, regardless of when you sign up.
  2. Agree to the TGPA membership waiver and terms & conditions each year.

Note: If you don’t sign the waiver, you won’t be allowed to play—even if you show up!

Cost to play varies per season – we announce pricing before each season on our social channels and through emails to all members.

Before registering, all new members must meet the following minimum skill requirements:

  • Know the rules of pickleball and proper on-court positioning.
  • Be able to keep score and manage your own game.
  • Know how to serve and return the ball.
Heads up – before your first play, you must know the basics of pickleball as well as safety and play etiquette. This is to ensure both your safety and the safety of other players!

The TGPA does not currently offer clinics for new players. If you’re new to pickleball, we encourage you to learn the basics before registering.

2.0 – 2.75 (Beginner/Novice)

  • You’re learning the basics of pickleball and working on consistency.
  • You can serve, return, and sustain short rallies but may struggle with accuracy and control.
  • You’re developing court positioning, game rules, and scoring skills.
  • Games at this level are focused on learning and having fun.

3.0 – 3.5 (Intermediate)

  • You have a solid understanding of pickleball fundamentals and can sustain longer rallies.
  • You are comfortable with court positioning and can execute basic strategies.
  • You make fewer unforced errors and can use a variety of shots, such as dinks and volleys.
  • You’re ready to engage in more competitive play while still improving your game.

3.75 and Up (Advanced)

    • You consistently demonstrate strong shot accuracy, power, and control.
    • You are skilled at advanced strategies, including shot placement and teamwork in doubles.
    • You perform well in fast-paced games with minimal unforced errors.
    • You may have experience playing in competitive environments or tournaments.

Please note that there is a possibility that new players may be required to attend a mandatory skill assessment to ensure proper court placement. Should the TGPA determine that skill assessements will be required, here’s how it would work:

  • You may still start playing on your chosen night before the assessment.
  • After the assessment, your skill level may be adjusted, and your court placement could change.
  • TGPA will contact you directly if an assessment is required.

Open Play: Open Play is designed for flexibility and inclusivity, allowing players of all skill levels to mix and enjoy games together.

  • All Levels Welcome: Players of all skill levels (2.0 to 3.75+) are invited to participate.
  • Mix-and-Match Games: Players rotate partners and opponents throughout the session to foster a fun and social environment.
  • Perfect for: Those who want to be able to meet and play with everyone, regardless of skill levels.
  • Important Note: While Open Play is casual, we encourage everyone to play respectfully and support newer players who may still be learning.

Level Play: Level Play is tailored for players who want  to play games with those who share their skill level.

  • Skill-Specific Courts: Games are organized by skill level (2.0-2.75, 3.0-3.5, 3.75+), ensuring players are matched with others at a similar ability.
  • Focused Competition: Players can work on improving their skills in a more structured environment.
  • Less Rotation: You’ll generally stay with similarly skilled players throughout the session.
  • Perfect for: Regular players who enjoy consistency in game difficulty.
